Wayland's Pack 3101 (usually shortened to "Pack 1") draws kids primarily from Happy Hollow and Loker Elementary Schools. We have monthly pack meetings for all in grades K-5, typically on the fourth Tuesday evening of the month. Grade-level dens also meet separately once each month or more. We try to have one weekend pack event in most months of the school year. For 2023-2024, we'll have our September pack meeting on a Sunday afternoon at the town beach, in early have an overnight at Camp Sayre in Milton in October, go tubing in February, run the pinewood derby car races in April, march in the Memorial Day Parade in May, go camping in June, and end the school year with a BBQ at the town beach. In 2022, we earned a Summertime Award for hosting more than one event each summer month, including camping, hiking, safely making a campfire, and watching the Woo Sox.
A Cub Scout pack is made up of several dens. Dens are groups of boys and girls of the same school grade, each with a parent/guardian as Den Leader with help from the other parents/guardians. Your scout's Den Number will be the same throughout their Cub Scout experience.
- Kindergartners are Lion Scouts (For 2023-24 Den #1)
- First Graders are Tiger Scouts (For 2023-24 Den #5)
- Second Graders are Wolf Scouts (For 2023-24 Den #6)
- Third Graders are Bear Scouts (For 2023-24 Den #7)
- Fourth Graders are Webelos Scouts (For 2023-24 Den #8)
- Fifth Graders are Arrows of Light, a.k.a. second-year Webelos (For 2023-24 Den #2)
A parent or guardian must attend activities with their scout. Your role decreases more each year as your child advances through the Webelos ranks, though all scouts must have a parent or guardian present - dropping off your child to a meeting or event is not allowed.
We have two uniforms that we use in our pack:
-
The “Class A” uniform is more formal and is the one that scouts must wear to den/pack meetings, fundraisers, and other “formal” events. Check with friends and relatives, as they might have some tucked away in a closet. We'll also do a hand-me-downs event for hats, kerchiefs, and the slides that hold the kerchief together at the end of September. More information on the uniforms can be seen at https://www.scouting.org/programs/cub-scouts/cub-scout-uniform/. These can be purchased at the New England Scout Shop, 23 Turnpike Road, Southboro (that's on Route 9 westbound not far beyond the Mass Pike Framingham exit). Kindergarten Lions need just the Lions t-shirt. Other scouts need the button-down shirt, kerchief, and slide that holds the kerchief together. Hats are optional but common in our pack. Official BSA pants and socks are optional and uncommon in our pack.
-
The “Class B” uniform is an orange Pack 1 t-shirt that our scouts wear to campouts and less formal events. We'll distribute these at a pack meeting.
Den advancement guides:
Each school-grade rank offers a number of required and elective activities that allow your child to earn the rank patch for that year. You can purchase guide books at the Scout Shop, but more families are finding the free ScoutBook app to be just as user-friendly. Den leaders use these guides to plan their monthly meetings so that kids are working towards their rank while having fun together. Earning the rank patch is not required to move along to the next year in Cub Scouts, but many kids enjoy tracking their progress and being recognized.
Becoming a new member:
To join our pack, please visit us on the BSA's national website. When you register there in September, you will be required to pay online for the remainder of the 2022 year. Starting in October, new families will pay for the remainder of 2022 and for all of 2023 at registration. Renewing members will be paying their 2023 dues later in the fall.
